This book has a really great plot and well crafted characters. What dragged my rating from 5 to 2 was the appalling number of typos (e.g 'heroine' instead of 'heroin') and too many grammatical errors to enumerate. These have been commented on by another reviewer. They have the effect of a 'stop - start' reading experience as the reader back tracks to make sense of a sentence with missing nouns, pronouns,or verbs, adjectives instead of adverbs, erroneously added apostrophes (as well as omitted apostrophes) - the list is endless. If Mr Ramsden does get and read reviews, I'd beg him to FINISH what has, I'm sure, been a great deal of hard work to create what could have been a superb book. Hell's Bells, Mr Ramsden, send me your manuscript. I'll proofread and edit it. Such a pity. Pippa Osborn

Inspector Doyle Daly The Rise and Fall of the Phoenix eBook David Jay Ramsden Reviews
A good read as a stand alone but improved by being part of the series. It sets the time perfectly
I really enjoyed this book. The writter has a way of making you feel tha tyou are right there with the detective and keeps your interest all the way to the last chapter.
The story was interesting. The writing was adequate. I rather enjoyed the book. But, Mr. Ramsden desperately needs to hire a proofreader. For example, the word "weather" was used five times when the author meant "whether". That would be locations 3099, 3122, 4908, 4075, and 4396. Stevedore was capitalized in the middle of a sentence and I stumbled for a moment wondering if it was a proper name. Then we had a sentence with "...home town was literary just down the road...." I thought the town was full of authors or was, perhaps, mentioned in a lot of novels but then I realized the author meant "literally".
Mr. Ramsden has too much competition to be careless. I won't be reading his book "Holland".
